Cold brew coffee is one of the joys of summer, delivering a potent coffee brew that can stand up to a glass full of ice. Cardamom and orange is a combination found all over the Middle East where it’s a classic flavor in many sweet treats.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups coarse-ground coffee
  • 4 cups cold water
  • 5 cardamom pods
  • 1 large orange
  • 1 1/4 cups canned coconut milk
  • Maple syrup
  • Ice

Preparation

  1. In a 6-8-cup pitcher or jar, place the ground coffee and water. Grind the cardamom in a spice grinder and add. Zest half of the orange and add the zest. Reserve the orange for another use.
  2. Stir the coffee mixture, cover and refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours.
  3. Place a wire strainer over a pitcher or large bowl and place a paper coffee filter in the strainer. Slowly pour the coffee mixture into the paper filter, stopping before it is to the top. Let drain before adding more coffee. When all the mixture is strained, stir the coffee gently to let more liquid drip down. You should get about 2½ cups cold brew.
  4. For each serving, combine ½ cup coffee mixture, ¼ cup coconut milk and 1 tablespoon maple syrup, and add lots of ice.

Serving Suggestion

Feeling fancy? Use a vegetable peeler to remove a thin strip of rind to use as a garnish.
