Sloppy Joes are a classic family-friendly meal on a bun. The combination of ground beef with peppers and onions in a sweet and tangy sauce just makes people smile. This budget-friendly recipe uses simple ingredients, so you can feel good about serving it.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef or plant-based crumbles
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 2 green peppers, chopped
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce
  • 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns

Preparation

  1. In a large saute pan, over medium-high heat, crumble the beef. Add onion, green pepper and garlic and stir until the beef is browned and the vegetables are softened, about 8 minutes.
  2. Stir in the tomato sauce, maple syrup, vinegar, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer. Cook, uncovered, for about 5 minutes, until thickened. Serve on toasted buns.

Serving Suggestion

Serve with coleslaw, corn on the cob or potato salad.
